Research has proven that those suffering from COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and other chronic lung disorders can benefit from consuming a healthy diet that is rich in vitamins and minerals. It is no surprise that broccoli tops the list of the lung healthy foods that are high in antioxidants. It can help protect the lungs by reducing the progression of respiratory illness.
Instructions
- 1
Add plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet. Add 2 to 4 servings per day. Be sure to make broccoli a priority when you stock up. The antioxidants that occur naturally in fruits and vegetables are known to ward off chronic illness and help to maintain a healthy level of lung function.
2Drink some orange juice. Orange juice provides vitamin C which offers an extra level of protection to the surface of the lungs. Vitamin C has also been found to linger in the area of the lungs that is responsible for the intake and outtake of oxygen, forming what can be described as a protective shield around the airways. A large glass in of orange juice with your morning breakfast should do the trick.
3Introduce fish products or flaxseed into your weekly menu. The Omega-3 fatty acids that are found in fish oils can serve as an extra level of protection for your lungs. These fatty acids are also known to promote the reduction of inflammation that can occur with chronic respiratory illnesses. Adding fish to your menu twice a week is sufficient, so don't overdo it. Some fish contain high levels of mercury, and too much is unhealthy.
4Have a cup of coffee. The caffeine in coffee can potentially increase lung function and has even been shown to reduce instances of asthma. But take heed, coffee is only helpful in moderation, and it should not exceed a cup or two a day.
5Keep the skin on your apples. The vitamin E found in the skin of apples can increase lung function and help to improve breathing. Also, a cup of green tea can add vitamin E to your diet, along with B which is also essential to good health.
