Kidney Infection Symptoms in Dogs

Kidney infection symptoms in dogs are similar to symptoms in humans. As with most bacterial infections, fever and lethargy are two common symptoms. Unfortunately, dogs are good at hiding illness, even serious illnesses such as kidney infections. Therefore, it is important that dog owners know other symptoms to watch for.

Symptoms

According to Merck Veterinary Manual, animals with kidney infections have a fever and may vomit. Increased thirst (polydipsia) and increased output of urine (polyuria) are also symptoms to watch for.

Additional Symptoms

Dogs with kidney infections may also appear uncomfortable and lethargic. In addition, you may notice blood in the urine. Many will have a lack of appetite and have a motheaten on umkempt appearance.

To diagnose kidney infection in dogs, veterinarians take a urine sample for laboratory tests.

Treatment

Dogs with kidney infections are usually put on oral antibiotics for several weeks until the infection clears. Some with this infection require hospitalization.

Left untreated, dogs with kidney infections can develop kidney failure.
